Albufeira Old Town
Once a Moorish stronghold dating back to the 8th Century with a castle built into its steep cliffs. The name Albufeira came from the Moorish Al-Buhera and refers to the tidal lagoon that formed beneath the cliffs; another popular interpretation is Castle of the Sea referring to the Moorish fortress overlooking the ocean. Lisbon’s 1755 earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated the Algarve coast and little of the castle remains. Albufeira Old Town has a historic charm in the old quarter located above Fisherman’s Beach with very narrow streets and white washed cottages along with the ancient clock tower.
